The sugar and acid in soft drinks promote tooth decay and enamel erosion, which are particularly prevalent among low-income and minority youth.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I join the Challenge?
It's simple to sign up. Just go to the sign-up page, www.fewersugarydrinks.org, and provide basic contact information. That information will only be used to provide you with on-going campaign updates and information about the Life's Sweeter Challenge, and will not be shared without your permission. If you have any questions, please click here to contact us.
Who can sign on?
Anyone can sign on! If you're concerned about health and the social, medical, and economic costs of this country's obesity epidemic, we encourage you to join scores of others in helping to reduce consumption of sugary drinks. Heart disease, diabetes, strokes, dental caries and other health problems that result from excessive sugar intake affect us all. A broad array of organizations, individuals, families, businesses, government officials and advocates have a stake in the Life's Sweeter Challenge.
What if my organization is not ready to change its policies regarding sugary drinks? Can we still sign on?
Yes! Although action to reduce sugary drink consumption (such as the suggestions in the Challenge materials) would be optimal, we recognize that not all groups or businesses are immediately ready to tackle the problem. Progress may take time, and we are hopeful that recognizing the Life's Sweeter Challenge will stimulate discussion and concern about the issue and the potential contributions we can all make to improve health in the United States. We'd like to hear reports of your organization's actions and progress on sugary drink issues (and share them with other signers), but that's not a condition of joining.
How can I get help with efforts to change company, organization, or institutional policy?
You'll find helpful information on this website and on its linked sites. The campaign will also have staff to answer your questions, identify relevant information and best practices, as well as put you in touch with others who face – or have faced – similar challenges. Write to us here.
When does the Challenge begin?
The Challenge begins as soon as you sign on. The Life's Sweeter campaign materials provide several ideas for you to get started; but the possibilities are limitless. Feel free to build on those ideas or come up with some new ones. And let us know how your efforts are going.
Is there a deadline for signing up?
No, there is no deadline for signing up. The Life's Sweeter Challenge to reduce consumption of sugary drinks will be an ongoing campaign. We'd like to have as many organizations, businesses, and individuals sign on as possible!
Does it cost anything to join?
No, there is no fee to sign on to the Challenge.
Where can I find more information about the campaign?
We plan to update the website regularly and distribute important information to Challenge co-signers as it becomes available. In addition to Life's Sweeter materials, we will link to other key sources of information regarding sugary-drink issues.
